If you have got your sights set on a successful, exciting, and rewarding career in forensic and criminal investigation and want to progress onto Higher Education to further your prospects, then this is the perfect course for you.

This course requires you to practically explore the principles of science that form the basis of some of the analytical techniques commonly used to investigate crimes and carry out analysis on forensic evidence. This course will provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need to achieve your future goals.

The Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Forensic Science is an advanced, technical qualification equivalent to 3 A-levels in science. It is a two-year full-time course for students who want to progress to higher education courses in the forensic and criminal investigation sector before entering employment.

Based in our state-of-the-art laboratories, you will get to perform real experiments and hands-on assignments using industry-standard equipment. You will be able to improve your practical skills under the supervision of experienced subject-specialist teachers.

There is an option of a one-year course that can be discussed during the interview.

What experience and skills will you gain?

In the first year, you will study four core units, covering the following content areas:

  • Principles and Applications of Science
  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Science Investigation Skills
  • Laboratory Techniques and their Application
  • Physiology of Human Body Systems
  • Genetics and Genetic Engineering

In the second year, you will study three core units, covering the following content areas:

  • Principles and Applications of Science II
  • Investigative Project
  • Contemporary Issues in Science
  • Human Regulation and Reproduction
  • Diseases and Infections
  • Applications of Organic Chemistry
  • Forensic Evidence, Collection and Analysis
  • Campus
    This course will be delivered at London South Bank Technical College - Nine elms
  • What do you need to apply?

    You need 4 GCSEs at Grades A*-C or 9-4, including Science, English Language, and maths.

    or

    Level 2 science-based vocational qualification and functional skills Level 2 English and maths qualifications.

    International students: IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill) and equivalent overseas qualifications.

  • How will you be assessed?

    You will be assessed by a combination of practical assignments, presentations, examinations and set tasks.

  • Where can this course take you?

    This course could lead to a career in a variety of science-related industries, including forensic and criminal psychology and forensic criminology. There is a wide range of occupations for graduate entry, including forensic laboratories, the police service, and customs.

    After successfully achieving the L3 National Extended Diploma in Forensic Science, you may wish to consider furthering your training with one of the following undergraduate programmes, available at London South Bank University (additional qualifications may be required):

    • BSc (Hons) in Forensic Science
    • BSc (Hons) in Psychology (Forensic Psychology)
    • BSc (Hons) in Psychology and Criminology
    • BA (Hons) in Criminology
    • BA (Hons) Law (Criminology)

    Additionally, you may consider L4 HNC in Forensic Science at the college. This course may also provide entry to other science or health-based degree courses or employment.
