Not for the faint of heart, the life of a Forensic Scientist is equal parts exciting, fascinating, varied, rewarding, and a vital part of the crime-fighting process. By applying analytical and scientific techniques – using a combination of chemistry, biology and toxicology – you could find yourself examining evidence from crimes; creating detailed scientific reports; presenting your findings in a court of law; performing blood grouping, DNA profiling, and examining splash patterns and distribution of particles; or even analysing handwriting or recovering data from electronic devices. The Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Forensic Science (Forensic Investigation) is a full-time, one-year course that leads to a nationally-recognised BTEC qualification, and is the equivalent to 1.5 A-Levels. It’s perfectly suited to those learners looking to progress to further study and Higher Education.
Taught by our industry-expert faculty at our state-of-the-art Nine Elms facility, this course combines both academic theory and practical experimentation; to teach you the fundamentals of analysing forensic evidence and the applied science principles that surround forensic investigations. What do you need to apply?
5 GCSE qualifications (or equivalent) at grade C or 4 or above (including Maths, English and at least one Science subject) or Equivalent Level 2 vocational qualification

How will you be assessed?
You will be assessed via a combination of written practical reports, portfolios of work, presentations, written research assignments and individual practical investigations; and assessment is by a combination of assignments and controlled assessments.
Assignments are set internally and externally moderated, and are graded at Pass, Merit, Distinction, and Distinction* level.

Where can this course take you?
On successful completion of the Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Forensic Science you will receive a nationally-recognised qualification that could allow you to directly enter employment in a forensic science-based role, or to further develop your knowledge and skills by advancing to a higher-level qualification such as the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science, or progress to a BSc (Hons) in Forensic Science undergraduate degree with London South Bank University (LSBU).
