The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is an introductory teaching qualification, which introduces learners to:

  • The roles and responsibilities in relation to teaching
  • Appropriate teaching and learning approaches within the candidate’s specialist area
  • Planning, delivering and evaluating micro-teaching sessions or assessed practice in a real work environment
  • The use of assessment methods and record-keeping

It is suitable for those who work, or intend to work, as:

  • Teachers in adult and community education
  • Teachers or trainers in the voluntary sector
  • Training personnel in the public sector or industry
  • Technicians and support staff in further and adult education

What experience and skills will you gain?

The course includes 3 hours of group learning a week – this will be delivered through a combination of online delivery via MS Teams and face-to-face delivery on site. In addition, some learning will be blended, through the use of our VLE (Moodle), Padlet and Screencast. The group learning sessions will include a mixture of teaching and learning methods, and will model the strategies and approaches you are learning about. Learners are also expected to undertake some independent study, including a reflective journal, as part of the course.

  • What do you need to apply?

    You will need qualifications in Level 2 English and Level 1 Maths, and to be familiar with Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel. Ideally, you will hold a Level 3 qualification in the subject area you are considering for delivery and/or have experience in your subject/skill at the appropriate level.

    Before the first teaching session, you will take an initial assessment and diagnostic in English and Maths, and will be matched with resources to help you to continue to develop your skills in both subjects independently. This qualification is not approved for anyone under 19 years old. All prospective learners will be interviewed before entry onto the course.

  • How will you be assessed?

    Students need a total of 12 credits to be awarded the qualification. You will be assessed through:

    • A piece of writing on the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training (1750 words)
    • A piece of writing on inclusive teaching and learning methods in education and training (750-1000 words)
    • A session plan which presents teaching, learning & assessment strategies to be used with learners, and the accompanying resources
    • An evaluation of the above lesson plan (1000 words)
    • A piece of writing about assessment (1000 words)
    • Micro teach (15 minutes) and observation of other learners’ micro-teaching (45 minutes)
  • Where can this course take you?

    Candidates who have achieved the Level 3 Award in Education and Training could progress to either the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training or the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. Both of these qualifications require the candidate to not have a criminal background which might prevent them from working as a teacher with young people or vulnerable adults.

    The Level 3 unit Understanding Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training is also a mandatory unit in the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training. For those candidates who achieve this unit as part of the Award, credit transfer will apply when undertaking the Certificate qualification.
