International Women's Day (8 March 2022): #BreakTheBias | South Bank Colleges

On the 8th of March. our staff got involved with the #BreakTheBias campaign by sending in photos of themselves striking the Break The Bias pose. 

Additionally, our learners were invited to join Fabulous Magazine to celebrate International Women's Day. They were able to hear from inspirational women in the industry including Charlene White, Katie Piper, Ferne McCanne and Anne Hergety. Plenty photos were taken amazing, including one from Charlene White who you may recognise from ITV News or Loose Women!

In the College, we organised for 3 amazing women to speak to our Level 2 and 3 Health and Social Care students!

Sanisha Wynter

sanishaSanisha Wynter is the Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator at Girlguiding, and previously worked as a race equity and inclusion advisor. Sanisha spoke about her lived experiences of striving for a successful career and her challenges along the way with regards to her sexuality, race, womanhood and cultural differences. She enjoys uplifting young peoples' voices, empowering workplaces to be accessible and supports national campaigns for girls and young women.  

Sanisha spoke openly about her struggles with what being a woman means to her and encouraged the students to be proud and embrace themselves as we continue the fight upwards towards equality and to break the bias. Sanisha celebrates her Ted Talks- ‘Vulnerability - your Superpower'. Sanisha encouraged all students to be an ‘Ally’ to each other.

 

Nadia Mohammed

nadia m Our very own Level 3 childcare Student Union Welfare & Diversity Champion Nadia Mohammed, spoke very openly about her journey as mother, student and all the various hats she wears on a daily basis. Nadia expressed how the support she has had from friends and staff at Lambeth College has completely overwhelmed her and is helping to shape her life and future opportunities. Nadia’s message to students was to be bold and believe in themselves. She encouraged students to embrace challenges and use it as a learning curve. ‘It will reveal your inner strength’.  Nadia shared that she did not have any family network in the UK, but within a short space of time, she had created a network of good friends that supported her journey of womanhood. Nadia encourages woman from all walks of life to share their issues and problems.‘It’s ok to feel down, but do not let it wear you down’.

Kimberly Dobbs our Creative Media Production student held a talk to our Level 2 and 3 Health and Social Care students, which are predominantly female groups.

It was interactive and filled with many hints and golden nuggets about womenhood. She gave students creativity through acronyms, spoken word and a whole lot of humour. Kimberly spoke about being a young single parent and her struggles and tribulations. She shared her dreams and aspirations and totally filled the students with drive and motivation in embracing their place as a strong woman in society.
