The Level 1 Certificate in Culinary Skills is a full-time City & Guilds qualification that takes approximately 9 months to complete; and has been developed in collaboration with industry specialists and established culinary professionals. It's designed to introduce you to the basic skills and knowledge that underpin all culinary careers, and be the first step on your path to kitchen success.

You'll be introduced to an array of cooking and preparation practices, including how to prepare and cook using techniques such as boiling, poaching and steaming; stewing and braising; baking, roasting and grilling; and deep and shallow frying. Plus, you'll learn the correct and safe way to reheat pre-prepared food and prepare cold dishes, as well as learn how to accommodate healthier food and special diets in your dishes. More than just developing your cookery skills, this course will also teach you about food safety, how to operate kitchen equipment, and what life in the catering sector is really like.

Taught by our industry-expert faculty at our state-of-the-art Nine Elms facility, this course is perfectly suited to adult learners who are looking to embark on a new career path in the culinary arts, seeking to retrain, looking to upskill for an existing role in hospitality, or wanting to re-commence their educational journey and advance to further qualifications.

  • What do you need to apply?

    GCSE Maths and English qualifications (or equivalent) at grade D or 3 or above or Entry Level 1 in Maths and English plus an assessment by South Bank Colleges

  • How will you be assessed?

    You will be continually assessed in a variety of ways including practical tasks, observations, assignments, and portfolio work.

  • Where can this course take you?

    On successful completion of the Level 1 Certificate in Culinary Skills (City & Guilds), you will receive a recognised certificate that can be a starting point for career progression in catering and hospitality. You may even be able to seek employment in a junior/trainee kitchen role.
