Lambeth College - Updates for Students

COVID-19 Safety

Dear Students,

We understand how frustrated you must feel about the current situation regarding the movement of learning online and the cancellation of exams due to take place over the next few weeks.

It is so important that you continue to attend all of your lessons and talk to your teachers and LDCs about how you are doing and how you are feeling. January can be a very hard month in the most normal of times – this year we appreciate that it feels even harder.

Following this week’s announcement of a new national lockdown, the College has moved to online and remote delivery of classes. This will be at least until the end of February as required by the Department for Education but may well be extended.

The College will remain open for a small number of 16-18 year old students including children of key workers. Please contact a member of the Student Services team if you would like to discuss coming into college at any point.

If you are in receipt of College meals, you will continue to receive payment in the usual way.

Remote Delivery

Our priority is to ensure that you receive a positive learning experience and that we maintain a sense of community that encourages you to engage with your teachers, friends and studies. Our expectations are as follows:

-          Students will be taught as one class (not as Group A or Group B) while learning is online

-          Lecturers and tutors will stick to their regular class timetables and will be available to support students as per timetable requirements

-          Lessons will start with live teaching as per the timetable

It is important that you attend your classes online as timetabled. Registers are taken at the start of every lesson and absences will be followed up in the usual way. If you are unable to attend your class as scheduled, please contact your Head of Faculty.

WiFi and Devices

If you are struggling to access your online lessons due to lack of device or WiFi, or a lack of study space, you should contact your LDC or programme leader who will be able to provide support.

Exams

The College has taken the tough decision to postpone the January exams in light of the Government guidance to stay at home and the high infection rates in London. We are working closely with the Department for Education and awarding bodies to ensure that we can support you in achieving your qualifications this year. We will provide further updates as and when we hear more about the exact arrangements being put in place.

In the meantime, it is really important that you continue to work hard at your studies and complete assessments as requested by your teachers. All this work will be key in supporting you to achieve your qualifications.

We understand that this is an anxious time for everyone and are keen to do all that we can to support you in your studies. If you have any concerns, please contact either Student Services or your Head of Faculty who will do what they can to support you.

We recognise that this is a challenging time for most students and want to reassure you that we are doing all that we can do to allow you to excel in your studies. Clare, our Head of Teaching & Learning, recommends listening to Idris Elba reading 'Don't Quit' – ‘so stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit, it’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.’ Please take this message to heart and use this time to get everything you can out of online learning until we can welcome everyone back onsite.

Best wishes,

Fiona Morey | Executive Principal
