Description

This course is aimed at mature students (19+) who wish to study medical related courses at university level but still need to obtain a level 3 qualification. It may offer a gateway to studying dentistry, pharmacy, radiography, biomedicine, biochemistry, optometry, dental hygiene, dietetics and other subjects related to medicine.
This is a one year, intensive course where you will be studying units (60 credits in total):
15 credits in study skills
12-18 credits in chemistry (depending on pathway),
18- 21 credits in biology (depending on pathway),
6 credits in physics (depending on pathway),
3 credits in maths.
In addition you will be required to spend at least 15 hours a week in independent study. We have a large Learning Resource Centre with quiet zones, work areas and computing resources.

Entry Criteria

Specific requirements for Access to Medicine and Medical Bioscience (19+ only):
Pathway 1: Biosciences, radiography, pharmacy, other health related areas.
Requires GCSE English and Maths at minimum grade C (9-5) or for international students IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill or equivalent overseas qualifications. These could be higher depending on your degree choice and please be aware that you must have these qualifications before you start the course. You should also have a basic understanding of science theory and terminology. Relevant work experience is desirable and may be a requirement on some courses.
You will undertake an online English and Maths test and must score minimum Level 2.
Pathway 2: Medicine and Dentistry applicants should have GCSE English and Maths at grade A* -B (international students IELTS 7.0). Work experience in a relevant field (e.g. hospital, clinics care home, voluntary work) is required as well as a background in science or aptitude to study science.
Students who have taken A levels need to have had a gap of at least 3 years before applying to study medicine or dentistry at university. During your interview, you will undertake our online English and Maths test and must score a minimum level 2 in both subjects.
You should bring a list with names of 4 chosen universities you wish to apply to, their entry criteria as well as a backup plan (additional option).
You will be required to take the UKCAT at an independent centre by the 2nd October. Students will need to achieve an average or above average score for each section to support their application to university.
