Is this the course for you?

In order to gain employment in the oral health and dental sector as a dental nurse, you’re required to register with the General Dental Council (GDC). The Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing is a fully-recognised and accepted qualification for entry onto the GDC’s register, meaning upon successful completion of this course, you will be registered as a dental nurse.

This course focuses on the practical skills and technical knowledge required to operate as a dental nurse in a professional setting, and will teach you how to provide chairside support to patients for a number of procedures, while adhering to legal and regulatory requirements.

You’ll learn about all key aspects of dental nursing, including emergency first aid; preparing and maintaining environments, instruments, and equipment; management of oral health diseases; contributing to the production of dental images; dental and regional anatomy; respiratory and circulatory systems; and health promotion and disease prevention.

As this qualification requires a large amount of on-the-job training, it’s ideally suited to those of you already working in an oral health environment, and have considerable knowledge and skills in relation to dental equipment, instruments and materials.

What do you need to apply?

5 GCSE qualifications (or equivalent) at grade C or 4 or above or Equivalent Level 2 vocational qualification at merit/pass or above

Additional information: You will be required to undergo a manual dexterity assessment.

How will you be assessed?

Some assessment will take place in the workplace, and will include a portfolio of evidence to meet the competence units in the qualification.

There are also four knowledge units that are assessed by individual online tests.

What modules will you do?

The competence units that you may cover could include:

  • First aid essentials

  • Reducing the risk to health and safety in the dental setting

  • The role and responsibilities of a dental nurse

  • Prepare and maintain environments, instruments, and equipment for clinical dental procedures

  • Principles of infection control in the dental environment

  • Provide chairside support for the assessment of patients’ oral health

  • Contribute to the production of dental images

  • Provide chairside support for the prevention and control of periodontal disease and caries and the restoration of cavities

  • Provide chairside support for the provision of fixed and removable prostheses

  • Provide chairside support for non-surgical endodontic treatment

  • Provide chairside support for the extraction of teeth and minor oral surgery

  • Provide information and support to individuals on the protection of their oral health

  • Assessment of oral health and treatment planning

  • Dental radiography

  • Management of oral health diseases and dental procedures

Where can this course take you?

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to register with the General Dental Council (GDC) in order to gain employment as a registered dental nurse.

Following the Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing, you may wish to further expand your knowledge and skills and progress to Higher Education; to study for a Foundation or Bachelor’s degree.
