Is this the course for you?

There are an estimated 1.5 million people living with a learning disability in the UK. The effects on individuals can vary widely, and affect people of every age and background. Each individual with a learning disability is entitled to receive personalised and lifelong support, provided by health and social care organisations and a network of carers.

This nationally-recognised qualification will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of issues surrounding different types of learning disabilities, and how these affect individuals in their daily lives. This course will enhance your knowledge and understanding of personalised care in this context, including safeguarding, positive risk taking, and an awareness of the autistic spectrum.

Whether you are looking to take your first steps towards a rewarding career in a teaching, personalised care, or support-based role; would like to develop specialist skills for your current position; or would simply like to better understand learning disabilities for personal reasons; this course can give you the knowledge and confidence to achieve your goals.

This is an online course taught over 6-12 weeks, meaning you can choose when and where you study, so it offers you the flexibility to fit your studies around your existing work, training, or home-life commitments, whilst achieving agreed deadlines set by you and your tutor.

What modules will you do?

You will study the following units:

  • Unit 1: Understand the context of supporting individuals with learning disabilities
  • Unit 2: Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
  • Unit 3: Introduction to personalisation in social care
  • Unit 4: Principles of positive risk taking for individuals with disabilities
  • Unit 5: Introductory awareness of autistic spectrum conditions
  • Unit 6: Principles of supporting individuals with a learning disability to access healthcare
What do you need to apply?

4 GCSE qualifications (or equivalent) at grade D or 3 or above, or Level 1 vocational qualification, or Level 1 qualification in English.

Additional Information: If you do not hold a suitable Level 1 qualification, or cannot provide evidence of one, you may still be able to enrol on this course following an initial assessment to test your level of literacy in English.

How will you be assessed?

This course can be completed fully online, or via paper-based learning. Both options are assessed via online tests and assessments.

Where can this course take you?

This course is suitable if you are already working in a in an health or social care, or support setting; are looking to find employment in a number of personalised care-based roles; or would like to further your understanding of learning disabilities for personal reasons. It can also give you the opportunity to increase your career options through further study.

After successfully passing the Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Working with Individuals with Learning Disabilities, you may wish to consider progressing on to one of the following Level 3 courses to expand your knowledge and skills:

  • Level 3 90-credit Diploma in Health and Social Care (BTEC)
  • Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (BTEC)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care (City and Guilds)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning (NCFE CACHE)
  • Level 3 Early Years Educator Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (NCFE CACHE)
