Is this the course for you?

The final stages of a person's life can be a hugely difficult, traumatic, and sensitive time, not just for individual, but for the family, friends, and care staff involved. It is also a period of that person's life where the utmost effort needs to be made to ensure their remaining time is as comfortable as possible.

The aim of this course is to enable you to provide the quality of end of life care, that we would all hope for and deserve. Whether the individual is experiencing their final days in a hospital or hospice, in residential care, or being cared for in their own home, this course is designed to improve that individuals end of life care no matter what the setting.

The Level 2 Certificate in Principles of End of Life Care covers the entire end of life process; from understanding what it means to work in this sector, to care planning, to managing pain and discomfort, right through to the time of death and dealing with loss and grief. This qualification will help you develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding required to ensure that mental and physical suffering is kept to an absolute minimum.

This course is an ideal starting point if you are starting out in your health or social care career, and equally suitable for those of you already working in the sector and looking to increase your understanding of end of life care. This course could also be of value for anyone who is caring for a loved one or family member during their final stages of life.

This is an online course taught over 6-12 weeks, so it offers you the flexibility to fit your studies around your existing work, training, or home-care commitments , whilst achieving agreed deadlines set by you and your tutor.

What modules will you do?

You will study the following topics:

  • Unit 1: Understand how to work in end of life care
  • Unit 2: Care planning in end of life care
  • Unit 3: Understand how to provide support to manage pain and discomfort
  • Unit 4: End of life care and dementia
  • Unit 5: Understanding the role of the care worker in time of death
  • Unit 6: Understand loss and grief in end of life care

What do you need to apply?

4 GCSE qualifications (or equivalent) at grade D or 3 or above, or Level 1 vocational qualification, or Level 1 qualification in English.

Additional Information: If you do not hold a suitable Level 1 qualification, or cannot provide evidence of one, you may still be able to enrol on this course following an initial assessment to test your level of literacy in English.

How will you be assessed?

This course can be completed fully online, or via paper-based learning. Both options are assessed via online tests and assessments.

Where can this course take you?

This course is suitable for you if you are already working in the healthcare or social care sector, are looking to find employment in an entry-level health or social care role, or would like to advance on to further study. This course is also suitable for anyone who is caring for a loved one or family member during their final stages of life.

After successfully passing the Level 2 Certificate in Principles of End of Life Care, you may wish to consider progressing on to one of the following Level 3 courses:

  • Level 3 90-credit Diploma in Health and Social Care (BTEC)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care (City and Guilds)
  • Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (BTEC)
