Whether you already work in hospitality and want to increase your wine knowledge, are looking for a career in the wine industry, have an ambition to become a qualified sommelier, or are just an enthusiast who wants to better understand your favourite tipple, the Level 1 Award in Wines is the perfect place to start.
On this course you'll explore the main types and styles of wine, including the common grape varieties and their characteristics, and major regions in which they are grown. You'll also learn how to make food and wine pairings, how to correctly store and serve wine, and will get to take part in tutored wine tastings.
You'll develop skills in wine identification through sight, smell, and taste, while also being taught how to describe wines accurately. So, if you would like to know how to tell your chardonnay from your chenin blanc, and your muscadet from your merlot, then this is the course for you.
The Level 1 Award in Wines is available as both a part-time day course, and via evening classes, both with multiple start dates, so it can be fitted around your existing work, study, or family commitments.
What modules will you do?
You will study a number of interesting and exciting topics such as:
- The main types and styles of wine
- Common wine grapes and their characteristics
- How to make food and wine pairings
- Tutored wine tasting
- How to store and serve wine
- How to describe wine using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine (SAT)
What do you need to apply?
Entry Level 3 English qualification
Additional Information: You must be of legal drinking age in the UK (18 years old or over) to enrol on this course.
How will you be assessed?
You will be assessed via a closed-book exam, consisting of 30 multiple choice questions based on what you have learnt during the course.
