The Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical Special Effects Hair and Media Makeup is an advanced, highly-technical qualification where you will learn how to apply and master intricate makeup techniques, work with facial postiche, and develop specialist skills in media hairdressing for a wide range of creative and exciting industries.

You will cover every aspect of advanced makeup technique for film, television, stage, and media purposes. This comprehensive course covers media makeup and postiche, hairdressing, character makeup, and special effects.

You'll also gain experience of what life working in the performance arts and media is really like, developing your relationship skills with colleagues, artistes, subjects and production teams, and getting an insight into costume design and the creation of prosthetics.

What modules will you do?

You will study a combination of compulsory and optional modules, in areas such as:

  • Avant-Garde hair and make up
  • Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps
  • Special effects makeup
  • Create, dress and fit facial postiche
  • Body art for competition
  • Camouflage makeup
  • Media makeup blogging
  • Media hairdressing

What do you need to apply?

  • 4 GCSE qualifications at grades A*-C or 9-4, including English Language
  • Level 2 vocational qualification and a Level 2 English qualification

Additional Information: Level 2 qualification in Beauty Therapy / Hair and Beauty

How will you be assessed?

You will be continually assessed by a combination of practical assessments (performing treatments and techniques on clients or in relevant real-life settings), observations, and portfolio course work.

Where can this course take you?

This course can lead to employment as a qualified makeup artist in the television, theatre, film, and media industries, or you could work as a freelance makeup artist.
