Is this the course for you?
The Level 5 Certificate in English Language Teaching (CELTA) is an internationally recognised introductory course for anyone wishing to become a qualified teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL). It's a practical English language teaching qualification that gives you the essential knowledge, hands-on teaching experience, and classroom confidence to qualify as an ESL (or TEFL) teacher.
You do not need prior teaching experience to enrol on this course, and it's suitable for anyone with an interest in teaching English in the UK or abroad, and who holds the required entry qualifications.
You could be a recent graduate looking to broaden your employability skills; already in employment and looking for a change in career; an existing teacher who wants to gain an additional formal qualification; or simply wish to gain a qualification that could lead to overseas employment.
Through a combination of hands-on teaching practice and observation of experienced teachers, you will develop practical and applied teaching skills, and through classroom-based study you will increase your in-depth understanding of teaching principles and theory.
You will study topics such as learners and teachers and the teaching and learning context, language analysis and awareness, English language skills, planning and resources for different teaching contexts, and developing teaching skills and professionalism.
This course is available ONLINE as an evening class, so can be fitted around your work, study, or family commitments. The classes will be held on Tuesdays, 5.45pm - 9pm and Thursdays, 5.00pm - 9pm and the course lasts for 19 weeks.
What modules will you do?
You will develop your knowledge, understanding, and skills in areas such as:
- Learners and teachers and the teaching and learning context
- Language analysis and awareness
- Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
- Planning and resources for different teaching contexts
- Developing teaching skills and professionalism
How will you be assessed?
You will be assessed via a combination of observed teaching practice, where you will teach English to adults of mixed ability, and written assignments based on your course learnings.
What do you need to apply?
Qualifications equivalent to that required for entry into Higher Education and English language skills at a minimum of CEFR Level C1-C2 or above
Where can this course take you?
Successful completion of this course can qualify you to teach English as a second language (ESL), and can lead to progression to further training and qualifications.
After successfully passing the Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), you may wish to consider progressing on to the Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (DELTA).
