Is this course for you?

The Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning will build upon your existing knowledge and help you to develop an in-depth understanding of the theoretical knowledge, and practical skills, you need for a career working directly with children and young people in school and college environments. This qualification has an additional focus on working in roles that offer specialist support for pupils' learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges.

You will learn about a variety of topics, including children and young people's development; safeguarding young learners; health and safety in a school setting; promoting an effective learning environment; supporting positive behaviour in children and young people; maintaining relationships with children and young people; and increasing your understanding of schools and colleges as organisations.

Alongside the traditional aspects of educational support, you will also develop specialist support skills, including planning, delivering and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher; bilingual support; supporting those with disabilities or special educational needs; and personal development and reflective practice.

This is a part-time course, with one day of college-based study per week. You will also be required to undertake a practical placement in a school setting for two days a week, throughout the duration of the course.

  • What do you need to apply?
    • 4 GCSE qualifications at grades A*-C or 9-4, including English Language
    • Level 2 vocational qualification and a Level 2 English qualification
    • Or proven industry-experience of support teaching in a suitable setting

    Additional information: You are required to have a clear DBS check to enrol on this course.

  • How will you be assessed?

    You will be assessed via practical work-based assessments and course work.

  • Where can this course take you?

    This course could lead to employment in a teaching assistant, special educational needs assistant, or learning support assistant role in an educational setting.
