Description

This course provides an opportunity to develop intermediate Counselling Skills and a framework for helping applicable to different types of helping support work; such as mentoring, key working, care planning, teaching, and pastoral work.
Counselling theory and approach - Person Centred approach and Gerard Egan skilled helper model.
This qualification is for candidates who:
Want to become competent in the use of counselling skills to help others either in a voluntary or an employed situation,
Want to take the first step in training to be a counsellor.
This course will not teach you to be a counsellor but it will give you counselling skills which will be useful in a variety of roles and may help you decide whether or not you want to train as a counsellor. Roles might include key working, care assistant, support worker or teaching assistant. Areas of work could include mental health, the homeless, substance misuse, education and health and social care.
Topics include:
Use counselling skills ethically and safely,
Establish and sustain the boundaries of the helping role,
Using person centred approach and skilled helper, framework, to work empathically as a helper to focus on the helpees needs and concerns,
Apply reflective self-awareness to enhance counselling skills,
Use a range of counselling skills to facilitate the helping interaction.

Entry Criteria

Our minimum entry criteria may be altered at any stage up to and including enrolment. All offers are subject to a successful interview and completion of an initial and diagnostic assessment.
For some of the programmes we offer you will require:
4 GCSE qualifications at or above grade D or 3, or equivalent level 1 vocational qualification.
Other requirements:
English Level 1 or above,
Completion of an introductory course in counselling (30 hours) or relevant occupational experience (in either an employed or voluntary role),
Recommended that you are at least 23 with sufficient independent adult life and work experience,
To be open to work on own self-awareness in relation to others in a group and be emotionally mature and stable,
Places are subject to interview.

Career Opportunities

After L4: BACP Certificate of Proficiency and later BACP Accreditation.
Careers: Areas of work as a counsellor include; community based counselling services, mental health services, NHS, addiction recovery services, counselling in schools, or in health and social care settings.

    Study Pathways

    L3 Certificate in Counselling Studies CPCAB
    or L3 Access to Counselling (for progression to University Counselling Psychology degree options).
    L4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling CPCAB
    L5 Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic Skills and Theory
    Progression to University undergraduate or postgraduate study in Counselling, Psychology, Addiction Counselling
    After L4: BACP Certificate of Proficiency and later BACP Accreditation
