Is this the course for you?

This AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Foundation course is an entry-level bookkeeping qualification, ideal for anyone who is seeking an introduction to basic bookkeeping principles and skills. This flexible course is delivered in partnership with Mindful Education, and combines online learning with face-to-face lessons in the classroom.

Please note: classroom attendance is fortnightly, with classes every other Monday from 5:30pm-7:30pm, and the course duration is 14 weeks.

This short course, studied over four months, will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to manage books effectively, including double entry bookkeeping, and associated documents and processes, up to Trial Balance standard.

On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded an AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping. This internationally recognised AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualification enables those working in accounting or those who looking to pursue accountancy as a career to gain knowledge, practical experience and the all-important certification often sought by employers.

This qualification can be used as a fast track to the AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting.

Study Method: Online and On-Campus

We have partnered with Mindful Education to deliver this course through our Online and On-Campus model.

Online video lectures are available on demand, and can be viewed from your phone, tablet or computer, meaning you can choose how, when and where you want to study. Each lesson lasts around 45 minutes and is accompanied by animations and motion graphics to bring concepts to life. Exercises, interactive case studies and analytical tools help to enhance the learning experience further.

On-Campus you benefit from regular college classes, without having to commit to attending multiple evenings each week. Experienced tutors will discuss and reinforce what you have learnt during your online study and are on hand to provide guidance on progress and assessment. Discussion and debate with classmates will help you apply theories to situations you face in the workplace.

Note regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19): Due to the nature of our Online and On-Campus courses, with key concepts being taught online through high-quality video lectures, students are able to continue their studies seamlessly with social distancing in place. Some of the regular On-Campus lessons can be replaced by remote Virtual Classroom sessions led by college tutors. This flexible approach can be easily adapted to suit government guidance and college policies.

What do you need to apply?

Level 1 Accountancy course or related qualification; for example, Business Administraion or Bookkeeping. Plus Level 1 in English and maths.

How will you be assessed?

This course is assessed through computer-based exams and a synoptic assessment, which draws on and assesses knowledge and understanding from across the qualification.

What modules will you do?

This course is designed to develop the solid bookkeeping skills necessary for most finance roles. You will gain the knowledge and skills needed to carry out typical bookkeeping transactions and tasks.

The course comprises two mandatory units: 1) Bookkeeping Transactions, and 2) Bookkeeping Controls.

Your areas of study will include:

  • Understanding financial transactions within a bookkeeping system
  • Processing customer transactions
  • Processing supplier transactions
  • Processing receipts and payments
  • Processing transactions through the ledgers to the trial balance
  • Understanding controls in a bookkeeping system
  • Using control accounts
  • Using the journal
  • Reconciling a bank statement with the cash book

You will also develop business communications and lifelong learning skills, applying what you learn on the course to the wider industry context.

Where can this course take you?

This course can lead to employment in a variety of accountancy and finance roles, in both the public and private sectors, including clerical assistant, trainee bookkeeper, accounts clerk, finance assistant, and accounts administrator.

After successfully passing the Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping, you may wish to consider expanding your knowledge and skills on another of our Level 2 AAT courses:

  • Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting (AAT)
  • Level 2 Foundation Award in Accounting Software (AAT)

Alternatively, you could choose to advance to one of Lambeth College’s Level 2 or 3 business and accounting courses:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Skills for Professions in Business, Administration & Finance (OCNLR)
  • Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Business (BTEC)
