This Early Years course is designed specifically to prepare apprentices with the knowledge and specialised skills needed to build a career in an early years setting. Early years educators work in several different environments such as nurseries, primary schools, and day care. Apprentices will have an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on young childrens' lives.

We will provide the key skills that you need to become a successful early year educator. You will learn how to work in partnership with parents and other professionals to understand the specific needs of each individual child. You will also learn how to plan and lead activities which caters to the development of young children.

What experience and skills will you gain?

  • Systematic synthetic phonics in the teaching of reading, and a range of strategies for developing early literacy and mathematics
  • Plan and lead activities, purposeful play opportunities and educational programmes which include the learning and development areas of current early education curriculum requirements
  • Engage in effective strategies to develop and extend children’s learning and thinking, including sustained shared thinking
  • Support and promote children’s speech, language and communication development
  • Support children’s group learning and socialisation
  • Model and promote positive behaviours expected of children such as turn taking and keep reactions and emotions proportionate

  • Plans and supervises child initiated and adult led activities which are based around the needs and interests of each individual child
  • Supports children to develop numeracy and language skills through games and play
  • Has key person responsibility to help ensure each child feels safe and secure
  • Observes each child and shapes their learning experience to reflect their observations
  • Meets the care needs of the individual child such as feeding, changing nappies and administration of medicine
  • Works in partnership with other colleagues, parents and/or carers or other professionals to meet the individual needs of each child

  • What do you need to apply?

    If you do not have Level 2 English and maths you will need to achieve this level prior to taking your end point assessment.

    For those with an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) or a legacy statement, the apprenticeships English and maths minimum requirements are Entry Level 3, and the British Sign Language qualification is an alternative to English qualifications for apprentices for whom this is their primary language.

  • How will you be assessed?
    • Early years educator qualification (Level 3)
    • Apprentices must successfully complete a first aid qualification in line with the requirements of the EYFS Framework (Annex A): Early years foundation stage (EYFS) statutory framework - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
    • English and maths (Level 2)
    • The apprentice also must complete a portfolio of evidence that will underpin the Professional Discussion. This cannot include reflective accounts or witness testimonies.

    The apprentice will then go through the End Point Assessment stage. Assessment 1: Knowledge Test (Pass/Fail) Assessment 2: Professional Discussion underpinned by a portfolio (Pass/Fail/Distinction)

    This apprenticeship programme sets a strong foundation for those looking to pursue a long-term career within the early years sectors, with natural pathways into other roles such as a nursery manager and teaching assistant.
