For International Women's Day, successful director Joanne Shaw delivered a presentation about her personal experiences and challenges of being a successful female leader and working in male dominated industries.

Joanne touched on topics such as: the inequalities and the barriers she faced in the workplace and overcoming it, the importance of women having great mentors, the importance of standing firmly with your moral compass and more.

Amongst the many stories she told, one stood out that many women found themselves relating to. Joanne found herself not being valued on an equal level to her counterparts. After a few months, she decided to speak out and have that critical conversation. The story took a positive turn when she revealed that she left the office with the salary she deserved.

The story highlights the importance of women having the courage to speak out against inequalities, but also the right ways to address these inequalities.

Inequalities such as gender inequality or salary inequality is unacceptable. Be strong enough to speak out, but go about it the right way

The presentation ended with questions from the audience.

Our student Moriam asked "did you get more courage as you got older?"

Trying to address inequalities while being woman can be daunting to say the least, but Joanne encouraged not only the student who asked the question, but the rest of the audience to not only have courage, but the different ways having courage could play out.

Courage is in us all and does not have to be confrontational

Rochelle McDonald, our Learning Development Coordinator, asked "what message can you leave us with for International Women's Day?"

Anything is possible. You are the navigator of your life. You can choose easy paths or you can choose hard paths, but make sure it's the right path for you. Stay true to yourself with any decision you make.

Joanne, thank you for delivering such a great presentation to our students and staff! The presentation was well-received and we hope to have you back again
