Name:  Alpha Barry

Age: 22

Current Role: C&W Investors

Degree:  BSc Urban Estate Management

Trainee Surveyor Year: 3

Q. Where did your interest in surveying come from?
A. From reading the Cushman & Wakefield (C&W) Trainee Surveyor Program at Lambeth College.  A program schedule caught my eye and since then I started to learn about real estate and property in general.

Q. Where did you first hear about C&W?
A. I first learned about C&W at Lambeth College via the Trainee Surveyor program’s leaflet.

Q. Why were you interested in a Trainee Surveyor position at C&W?
A. The program schedule was interesting and allowed me to put theory into practice while still learning.  Also, the career prospect is a real motivator because the program pathway plan allows trainees to have an idea of their future plan with the company’s support.

Q. What was the recruitment process like to get your position?
A. The recruitment process was very open with a high standard of professionalism.  I felt proud to be among the candidates. The team-building games took my mind off the interview process and helped to reduce my stress levels.

Q. What was your first placement like?
A. My first day with C&W was a bit daunting because I didn’t know what sort of tasks I was going to be assigned and I was nervous that I wouldn’t meet their expectations. Everyone in the team was helpful and friendly, so I soon overcame my fears. I soon got the hang of the tasks that were assigned to me with the help of my buddy.

Q. What types of projects are you involved in?
A. Monitoring the UK Deal Flow Database and administrating different funds Investments Committee Forms.

Q. Talk me through an average day at C&W?
A. An average day at the office starts with me checking through my inbox to see if there are any queries from the previous day,in particular for Investments Committee (IC) forms from the funds that we manage.  I am in charge of making sure all signed off IC forms are filed, created into PDF files and uploaded to the Sharepoint site.  I liaise with colleagues for any missing IC forms and track them down so they are uploaded and filed.  I am currently arranging access to the Paris properties Database which involves international liaison with to Paris and Frankfurt.  This allows everyone to view potential properties available for investment as part of a new Retail Fund that we are launching in the autumn.
I’m also in charge of the UK Deal Flow Database which needs regular updating.   To do this, I track down properties introduced to Cushman & Wakefield Investors (CWI) either internally or externally from the introductions mailbox and add them to the database. These properties will then be considered in a team meeting for potential investment.

Q. You are studying your Urban Estate Management part-time and also working at C&W part time, how do you manage fit it all in?
A. It really depends on how many modules I get from University in a semester and the projects involved with it.  As I work part time, I sacrifice my weekends to participate in group projects.  However, the way the program is tailored allows me to manage my time and keep on top of my daily tasks.  The team I work with are aware of the program, which makes life easier!

Q. What do you think Trainee Surveyors need to succeed at C&W?
A. Determination, time management, self discipline and hard work.

Q. Are you involved in any of the sports/social activities at C&W?
A. I am a member of the football team. I like socialising and football is a good way of meeting new people who also work in the real estate business.

Q. Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
A. In five years I see myself in a senior position at C&W.

Q. You’re fluent in French; does this help you in your role at C&W?
A. My French has been very useful in my everyday task at C&W. I often translate documents written in French for my team when they are dealing with clients based in French speaking countries.

Q. Do you see yourself working abroad in your career?
A. If the opportunity arises, it would be something worth considering.
