What Women Want

Lambeth College’s brand new Clapham Centre Theatre was the venue for this year’s International Women’s Day show.  Students from a range of Performing Arts and Independent Living Skills courses, based at our Sixth Form Centre, came together with special guests The Russian Ballet School - Manor Studio to produce an outstanding exhibition of classical and contemporary dance, music and drama.

The show opened with a beautifully crafted instrumental overture played by members of the Independent Living Skills course. Fikret Ahmet and Yahya Surti’s dance moves during the routine delighted the audience and paved the way for a spectacular display of choreography to follow.

This year we were honoured to be joined on stage by students from the Russian Ballet School – Manor Studio in Clapham.  Their enchanting performance, directed by Eugeny Goremykin, former principal dancer of the Bolsoi Ballet, mesmerised all that witnessed the splendour and beauty of their performance.  Former Lambeth College student Kiraly Saint-Claire joined the Ballet School last summer after completing his Performing Arts: BTEC National Diploma course. He returned, with fellow company members, to a very warm welcome.

Standing ovations sent the dancers from the stage and before the audience had taken their seats for the second part of the show our students were in position for a change of tempo. First came ‘Working Women’, a dance celebrating modern day women and their complex balance of lifestyles and workloads.  The drama ‘Miss Consexuality’ examined issues surrounding safer-sex and ‘What Women Want’ took a light-hearted look at the fun-loving attitudes of young women and girls.  More individual and collective performances using physical theatre and poetry followed along with solo renditions of ‘Heroes’ by Tiesha Williams and ‘Daddies Girl’ written and performed by Jessie Sirr.

The finale brought together the whole cast once again to the sound of Madonna’s ‘Vogue’.  A dazzling display of colour, glamour and acrobatics created a carnival-like atmosphere in the theatre and left the audience wanting more.

The proceeds from this years International Women’s Day show have been pledged to the charity Rape Crisis.
