Lambeth College has joined forces with a host of celebrities, from Sara Cox to Colin Firth, and with businesses, organisations and individuals across the UK by signing up to the 10:10 campaign and pledging to cut its carbon emissions by 10% in 2010.

The announcement was part of the College’s first ever ‘Green Day’ on 2 March 2010.  During the day students took part in a range of activities including the launch of a new organic herb garden, a water taste test, fair trade workshops, film screenings, working out on energy bikes, an ‘eco driving simulator’ brought in by Global Action Plan, a recycling lecture and a demonstration of the workings of an electric motorbike.  Students were encouraged to wear something green on the day, and organisations including Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and Lambeth Council visited the College. The day concluded with a ‘student views’ movie premiere, and a questions and answers debate hosted by members of Envision.  Students from our Performing Arts (Dance): BTEC First Diploma course closed the day with a specially choreographed dance routine to celebrate Lambeth College’s commitment to the environment.

Dame Lorna Boreland-Kelly, Chair of Governors at the College, said: “Our students are really passionate and enthusiastic about preventing climate change, and Green Day has been a great success. The College is absolutely committed to cutting carbon emissions and our new Sixth Form Centre was designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible.  We are very proud to have signed up to the 10:10 campaign.”

Dame Lorna then presented winning students, who took part in the ‘Improve Your College’ competition, with their certificates and prizes after their ideas and suggestions for a more ‘green and beautiful’ student environment were chosen for their innovation and practicality.
