Designer students: The team show off the great design work that resulted from their project on the Sorrell Young Designers Programme.

June 2009

The work of Lambeth College BTEC National Diploma Design students went on show at Somerset House as part of the Sorrell Young Designers Programme during June.

This is a national design programme for young designers supported by the Sorrell Foundation, where students act as consultants and clients, and are supported by mentors from the design industry.

Sir John and Lady Frances Sorrell founded the Foundation in 1999 with the aim of inspiring and developing the creativity of young designers through their work.  The international array of top designers and architects who have donated their time to help the programme include the Richard Rogers Partnership; Paul Smith; Will Alsop; Marks Barnfield; Thomas Heatherwck; Wolf Olins; Seymourpowell; Conran and Partners; Priestman Goode and Kevin McCloud.

This is the first year that the programme has included further education students in the process.  The students found the project very inspiring as it helped to reinforce their skills and understanding of what it takes to become effective designers.  It offered them the chance to experience the process of design from another perspective while looking at the issues of communication, understanding the target market, negotiation and problem solving.  They were also given the opportunity to meet and work with Design students from Greenwich University.

The Lambeth College team researched issues raised by fellow students concerning the current branding of Lambeth College.  They then produced a client brief based on their findings.  They presented this to Greenwich students and asked them to develop visual ideas based on image and communication that would appeal to the target market.  The results of this exciting branding project then went on show at Somerset House.

The success of this collaboration was celebrated in May at Greenwich University where Sir John and Lady Frances Sorrell presented the group with their certificates

Following the project students Hayley Charles and Dmitri Muravjov have successfully gained places on degree courses beginning in September 2009.
