The Creative Coffee Morning

Students show off their works of art at our Creative Coffee Morning event in May.
May 2009
An exquisite collection of students’ paintings, drawings and prints went on show at our Clapham Centre this month. Talented artists from the Preparation for Vocational Skills course used scenes and landmarks from around Westminster as inspiration for their work. As part of the project they planned a visit to Westminster; took photographs and made sketches to use as reference materials for their finished pieces. The works were then framed professionally.
The exhibition opened with a coffee morning event where students, family and friends attended. During the day many other college users browsed the show and talked to the artists themselves about their work.
Shazia Akhtar and Sarita Smith were two of the exhibitors. They were both very proud of the work they had done and believed they had learnt lots of new skills from the project. Shazia said: “I’ve learnt to use different artists materials such as watercolour paints and stencils and it has been a really interesting part of my course.” Sarita added: “We’ve all had lots of fun doing the work and planning our exhibition. I’ve also learnt how to do Gothic writing.”
Their tutor Lloyd Mead said: “The students have found this project to be very engaging and useful. The trip to Westminster was to research the various themes the students have chosen and they used their time there very creatively. Each student was equipped with a digital camera and they used them to record images of buildings, the river and the buses and trains they saw. The students demonstrated how innovative, resourceful and productive they could be.”
