Being the best: Coach Angus Pickthall and members of the team show off their trophy. A job well done!
Lambeth College have been crowned FE Colleges Football Premier League Champions 2008/09.
‘The line between success and failure is a fine one.’ This time last year the disappointment of missing out on the top spot was a bitter pill to swallow for our boys as they fell at the final hurdle. A must win game ended in defeat and the team’s hopes and aspirations for glory were shattered.
This year the team were in an identical situation as they ran onto the pitch for their final fixture of the season against Richmond College. They had to win. The lessons of last year had to be remembered if they were to avoid second-best once again. And in a tense affair the teams were nil-nil with fifteen minutes left on the clock when Jonathon Etshindo rounded their keeper to slot home the opening goal. Then with Richmond on the offensive in their desire to force an equaliser Lambeth College got the winner on the break. Emmanuel Osei-Poku cut through the Richmond defence to pierce the back of the netting with a goal he pulled right out of the top drawer. It was two-nil and the FE Champions Trophy was on its way back to Lambeth for the second time in the team’s history.
Team coach and sports tutor Angus Pickthall paid tribute to his team. He said: ‘The boys showed the same amount of talent and flare as they did the previous season. The only difference was the ‘hunger’. Their desire to win what was once denied has driven them all the way. And it has been a pleasure to watch all season. Even when we have experienced setbacks along the way we have worked hard to identify weakness and turn it into strength. Above all each player has learnt that teamwork and hard work are the keys to success. I have already challenged them to go out and win it again next season.”
