College Showcases Expert Construction Skills
March 2009
It was a trip down memory lane for Deputy Mayor Cllr Christopher Wellbelove as he helped launch a special construction and engineering Employers’ day at Lambeth College held at the Vauxhall centre on 18th March.
Lambeth College was hosting a day of expert classes as part of the government’s nationwide “From Competence to Excellence” programme and invited employers, stakeholders, college governors, staff and students to celebrate the event. These classes offer students an insight into the latest technology and innovation in their field, and underline the world class skills they will need in tomorrow’s work place.
Students also had the opportunity to talk directly to employers and representatives from the Olympic Project and the Sector Skills Councils for construction, building services and engineering.
Cllr Wellbelove was a former student at the college and studied Telematics at the college’s Brixton centre. “In those days I could never have imagined I would be going back into the college as the Deputy Mayor!,” he said. “Lambeth College is helping students become more employable and also helping employers get the trained staff they need. This is really important as our research shows that people in the borough are now very concerned about jobs and their employment prospects. I want to thank the staff and management at Lambeth College for the good work they are doing.”
The expert classes organised at Lambeth College may provide a stepping stone for the best students to compete in UK skills competitions and potentially beyond, to participate at future WorldSkills events in Calgary in 2009 and London in 2011.
