Caped Crusaders Fly in to Cast Their Votes
Super Heroes: Batman and Batgirl arrive with the ballot box!
June 2009
Taking time out from their battles with Joker and Penguin the Dark Knight and his accomplice Batgirl flew in to Lambeth College this month to encourage students to cast their votes in our Students Union Presidential elections.
Batman and Batgirl (aka Learning Mentor Dale Williams and Skills Coach Dionne Konstantinious) were on a mission to promote a large turnout for the elections and to ensure fairness and legitimate voting.
The Students’ Union is a very important and integral part of student life at the College. It is vital in the organisation of enrichment activities and social events as well as playing a role in the overall governance of the College. Each year the Union elects a member to sit on the Board of Governors. Course Representatives meet regularly to let College managers know what fellow students are happy and/or unhappy with on their courses and whether the teachers, trainers and facilities are providing a good enough service.
Dionne (Batgirl) said: ‘We decided on a light-hearted approach to encouraging students to vote this year. But achieving a large voter turnout is a very serious matter. We encourage all students to get involved in the union and to take an interest in how the College is run. Everything must be geared to providing a first-class service but to achieve this we need the input of the people we serve.’
Dale (Batman) is a former Union President and has a lot of experience of running a busy schedule of activities throughout the year. He said: ‘Most of the Students' Union's activities are designed for its memebers to have fun and live life to the full. Therefore who better to endorse this wonderful institution than two of the world's most famous super-action heroes?’
John Henry (right), pictured here with Centre Representatives Sadiqu Baoku and Jemma Hall, is the new Students’ Union President for the Academic Year 2009/10 and begins his official duties in September 2009.
