Delia Monk accepts her award from Guardian Editor Alan Rusbridger at the NCTJ Excellence in Journalism Awards in Bristol during November.
Two former Lambeth College students have won prestigious journalism awards.
The students, who completed their journalism course at Lambeth College in February this year, were rewarded in the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) Awards for Excellence in Journalism.
Delia Monk who now works on the news desk at the Nottingham Evening Post jointly won the Top Scoop Award. She found her scoop story while on a sponsored trip to the European Parliament in Brussels. Delia went on the trip while studying at Lambeth College. Her story made page 4 of the Independent.
She said: “It was a real surprise and honour to be given this award by the NCTJ. I really enjoyed studying journalism at Lambeth College, which took a real hands-on approach and gave me confidence to tackle a story like this.”
Ben Pearce, who now works on the sports desk at the Islington Gazette, was highly commended in the Sports Award. He said: ”Five months at Lambeth College made the difference between being an aspiring journalist and becoming a journalist with a dream job.
“I left my job as a barman 13 months ago and am now covering stories from community sports news to writing match reports on local, premiership and even England matches.”
Another Lambeth College student Liz Webster was short listed for the News Reporter Award. Liz, who works on the news desk at the Western Daily Press, said: “These awards for Lambeth College are a great reflection of a brilliant course.
“The tutors were so knowledgeable about the real things we would need to know to work on a paper and used examples from their own experiences to bring it to life. We had trips to Parliament and the Royal Courts of Justice which all helped to put what we learned into context. It was just sad it was over so quickly.”
