Two dynamic students from Lambeth College were honoured at the recent ‘Our Heroes Awards 2007’ ceremony hosted by the South London Press and sponsored by Shell UK Ltd.

The Shell Centre in Waterloo was the setting for the ceremony.  Thirty-three nominees gathered to share their amazing stories and be congratulated on their positive achievements.

These awards go to local people on an annual basis. Categories for nominations include Student of the Year, Teacher of the Year, Bravery Award, and Young Sports Achiever.

Danielle Spiers, an A Level student from our Clapham Centre, won the Student of the Year award. Danielle was nominated for the award by her tutors and Rosemary Stewart , the Head of Marketing.  Rosemary said: “Danielle has had an amazing year at the College.  She has achieved straight As in her AS year exams as well winning a sponsorship from top city firm Cushman and Wakefield.  She has achieved all this as well as bringing up a young son.”

Youcef_Bey_Zekkoub_web_iYoucef Bey-Zekkoub, studying PC Maintenance and System Support at our Brixton Centre, won the Runner-Up prize in the Student of the Year category.  Youcef came to the College a few years ago having arrived from Algiers.  He enrolled to do an ESOL course unable to speak a word of English.  He has since mastered his language skills and progressed to a vocational course.  Youcef hopes to work on an IT helpdesk or in software support for a major company when he finishes his course.  He was nominated for the prize by ESOL tutor Susan  McDowell.  She said: “Youcef is the perfect student.  He really appreciates the opportunities he has had at the College and is determined to succeed.”

Both Danielle and Youcef have recently received Lambeth College Awards, which recognise achievement and dedication.

They received their ‘Heroes’ awards from Kids Company director Camila Batmanghelidjh during the gala ceremony on Tuesday 27th November.
