A performance to support International Women’s Day
March 2007

Talented students from a range of Lambeth College courses came together this month to show support for International Women’s Day.  They staged an energetic showpiece in the College’s Clapham Centre theatre with song and dance routines, extracts from current performing arts projects, physical theatre, comedy and mime.  There was also a guest performance of poetry by former student and local performance artist, poet and storyteller Uzoamaka Okafor-Obi.

The theme of the show was to celebrate the achievements of women and their emancipation, with features on Emmeline Pankhurst and the Suffragette movement to how women fulfil many roles today that were once forbidden.  It also aimed to highlight that the struggle for freedom and equal rights and opportunities still goes on today in many parts of the world.  Indeed, the show begins with an abstract piece that looks at the story of 16-year-old Atefeh Rajabi who was executed in Iran for alleged crimes against chastity.

The performers dedicated the show to Atefeh’s memory and all donations made on the night were donated to Amnesty International.
