Students from Lambeth College’s Radio: C&G Level 3 Diploma - Advanced Media Techniques were given the opportunity to rub shoulders with a top professional from one of London’s most popular radio stations this month.
Choice FM newsreader Geraldine Cooper came to the College’s radio studios at Vauxhall Centre to talk to students about what it’s really like to work in and manage a busy radio newsroom. Geraldine explained how she had come to join the Choice FM news team and described the type of work she was required to do in order to produce interesting news stories for the station’s listeners.
The students quizzed Geraldine on the ‘ins’ and ‘outs’ of her job as a radio journalist and how she got her all-important first break in the industry. They were particularly keen on how news items were scheduled and which type of stories made the headlines.

Having just completed a very challenging news production module for the Award, students are currently putting the final touches to their course portfolios and technical projects. Course tutor Annabel Pearcey invited Geraldine along to give the students an insight into the exciting yet demanding world of radio journalism and news production. She said: “It is really important for students to talk to practitioners from the industry; those who can advise on current trends in radio and inspire young wannabes to take their training and qualifications seriously. Geraldine did just that with a very motivational talk.”
