Who’s Watching You?
November 2006
Be Vigilant! Ed Gibson and Steve Lamb talk to our students about the importance of internet security.
Dark forces are at work and watching your every move. Your web cam knows what you had for breakfast and hackers have stolen the data from your hard disk. Internet fraudsters have taken your identity and gained access to your bank details. This may sound a little paranoid but you can no longer afford to be careless about securing your PC from an ever-growing number of e-criminals.
Computing and Business students from Lambeth College's Career Academy met two of the biggest names in the fight against e-crime. They were Microsoft’s Ed Gibson, Chief Security Adviser, and Steve Lamb, Technical Security Evangelist. They delivered a fascinating seminar on the dangers faced by anyone who uses a PC or who simply has information about themselves stored on a PC anywhere in the world. That, of course, means every one of us.
Former FBI agent Ed Gibson is an expert in the investigation of financial crime and has been entrusted with the colossal task of identifying the many threats to Microsoft’s software security. Together with his colleague Steve Lamb, he is responsible for addressing the issues and building changes into Microsoft products.
Ed and Steve were invited to the College after Course Manager Paul Riley talked with them at an IT security event at Olympia. He asked them about visiting the College and they were keen to do so. Says Paul: “They didn’t disappoint us. The students found this seminar very important to their studies. The more the internet develops the global market place where big money and important information change hands, the more criminals will want to exploit it. A job in IT and software development means you will now have to have some insight into securing yourself and your company’s important data.”
Students found the visit very enlightening. Christopher Wraight from the Computing: BTEC National Diploma course said: “Ed gave his talk with great humour and was very entertaining. He made us all think about just how vulnerable we are to internet fraud and to criminals who use the internet to groom victims.” Vitor Costa said: “I came out of the lecture more enlightened. Ed told us about the threats out there and Steve gave us great tips on how to protect our PC operating systems.”
Ed and Steve said what a pleasure it had been to talk to our young people. Ed said: “They are bright, talented and obviously want to learn.”
