Two Lambeth College students have recently received Helena Kennedy Foundation (HKF) Awards.  The Awards are for individuals who, for one reason or another, were denied the opportunity to continue their education first time around.  The winners receive a bursary of £1,000 during their first year at university. The Foundation received 260 applications this year of which 65 received awards.

Terrieka Cole, 22, from the Early Years BTEC National Diploma course and Farzana Quddus, 19, from the Business AVCE (now the BTEC National Certificate) course have both been successful and will go on to higher education in September with the backing of Baroness Helena Kennedy.

Terrieka applied for the bursary with the help of her tutor Yvonne after being accepted to do a degree at Roehampton University.  On the application she had to explain why she deserved the award and how she would use it.  She says: “I am so excited about going to university and feel very honoured to be considered by Helena Kennedy as someone who is worthy of the gift she has made.”  Her tutor Yvonne said: “I’m delighted for Terrieka.  When she found out the good news I just wanted to hug her.  She is such a hard working and dedicated student and I know she will make an excellent Early Years professional.”

Farzana_web_1iFarzana was equally delighted to be chosen and was also helped in her application by her tutor Marvics.  She is now destined for London South Bank University to do a degree in Business Administration.  She says: “I’d really like to thank the HKF and in particularly Marvics for being a wonderful tutor.  I also think the HKF is very generous and helps to encourage people into higher education who wouldn’t otherwise consider it an option.”  Marvics said: “Farzana is a great role-model to her fellow students.  She has recently received a dedication award from the Business School and always produces excellent results in her course work.  She thoroughly deserves this award.”
