Sunshine and Culture

Culture Day_web_1A truly international flavour: Students share with each other traditional music, food and dance at our 'Celebration of Cultures' event in June.

June 2006

Students of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses at Lambeth College certainly know how to enjoy themselves.  After working hard to complete exams and course work this month, it was time to let their hair down, put the music on and dance the bright and sunny afternoon away at this year’s ‘Celebration of Cultures’ event.

This event is now in its sixth year.  Students come together and perform traditional music and dance from their home countries.  On the programme this year included performers from Togo, Latin America, Somalia, the Ivory Coast, Bangladesh, Europe and the Middle East. There was also a delicious selection of international food, a Moroccan tea room and an Ethiopian café.  Students decorated the event with paintings, drawings and other crafts and artefacts.

The event was the finale to Lambeth College’s contribution to ‘Refugee Week’.  Teachers and students mounted an exhibition entitled ‘Facts and Myths’ which deals with issues surrounding asylum seekers and refugees.  Several students also took part in a debate broadcast on the College’s radio station Vox Radio earlier in the week.

ESOL tutor Antoinette Momtahan said: “The Celebration of Cultures event acknowledges the talents and gifts that our students bring with them from around the world and share with us.”
