Lambeth College Business students have been preparing themselves for some exciting experiences this summer when they head to the City for paid internships with prestigious UK and international companies.

Top firms such as Bloomberg, ITV, Citigroup, Freshfields, BUPA and McGraw Hill are lining up to take on students linked to the Career Academy UK.  The students will get six weeks paid employment over the summer and have recently been taken on a west end shopping spree to get kitted out with the essentials for working in such polished environments.

The students are from the Business: BTEC Nartional Diploma.  The Lambeth College Career Academy is giving them the opportunity to enhance their career opportunities by taking part in one-to-one mentoring, industry visits, business seminars as well as the internships.

Nkosi Khumalo, 18, is looking forward to his placement with ITV’s financial centre in central London.  He says: “I just know this is going to be really valuable experience for me. Everybody has heard of ITV and I will be so proud to put this down on my CV in the future.”  Karin Wright, also 18 and studying on the same course, will be setting off to work at McGraw Hill, a company specialising in global publishing, financial, information and media services.  She says: “This experience will help me apply the skills I have learned at college.  I expect I will learn new skills and get an insight into the workings of such a successful company.”

Bukola Ogundare and Abraham Wilson, both 19, are heading to Bloomberg, a multinational company which provides financial and marketing data, news and analytics as well as media services through TV, radio and on-line.  They will be working in their Sales department.  Bukola says: “I’m going to try and improve my sales and marketing skills by learning from the professionals.  I would like to do a degree in marketing at university once I have completed my course so this internship is ideal for me.”

This is a scheme which Lambeth College is keen to introduce on many more of its vocational programmes.  It is in line with the Government’s aspirations to engage employers more proactively in setting the agenda for further and higher education.
