Green writing: Alice Klein's environmental features for 'The Independent' almost won her a major award.
Lambeth College journalism student Alice Klein was pipped at the post for the prestigious Press Gazette Student Feature Writer of the Year at the 2006 Student Journalism Awards.
Alice, a student on the post-graduate NCTJ course, was not downhearted, saying it was still a thrill to have been short-listed for the award and that the presentation at Reuters London headquarters was fantastic.
Alice’s features had all been published in the Independent newspaper where she had carried out two weeks work experience on their features desk. The features made it into the green pages environmental section and followed a similar theme throughout. The first was about how wasteful the traditional garden lawn can be with gallons of water and pesticides used each summer to keep them green. The second was about the danger of extinction for the blue fin tuna because of its popularity in Japanese sushi dishes. The third focuses on a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) report into the many toxins we encounter in our everyday lives and how they are affecting polar bears living in the North Pole.
Alice said: “The ceremony was great. Piers Morgan was the host and Geert Linnebank from Reuters gave a speech about the challenges and opportunities for on-line journalists. It was good to meet and talk to top journalists and other students and be given a tour around the hub of the Reuters headquarters.”
Once her course is complete Alice will look for work with a local newspaper but hopes to become an environmental correspondent for a national newspaper. Her short-listing for this prize gives her a great chance of achieving this.
You can read Alice's articles on the Independent newspaper's web site. Only the first paragraphs are available to read free. You will have to pay to view the whole page. Features available are: Toxic Shock and The environmentally sound search for sushi alternatives.
September 2006 Update
Alice has recently joined the city of Exeter's local newspaper - the Express & Echo. Almost immediately she has become involved in a multimedia project for the paper which follows the lives and fortunes of two young single mums from Exeter. Alice was chosen for the project because of her experience gained from the multimedia element included in her NCTJ pre-entry course here at Lambeth College. Installments of 'Pram-faced Girls can be downloaded to view on your pc (wmv format) at thisisexeter.co.uk/pram.
