A Big Break: Joanne has had her first professional freelance report broadcast on the BBC World Service.
Former Lambeth College Radio student Joanne Simmons is beginning to turn the skills she acquired last year at the College to her favour at the very top of the broadcasting industry. Last month Joanne made her first freelance report for a programme broadcast on the BBC World Service. Entitled ‘Old for New’, the report was made for BBC World’s ‘Digital Planet’ and investigates whether the wealth of new games consoles, mp3 players and ever-fancier mobile phones really do offer us all something new and innovative.
Joanne has made new contacts in the industry by good networking and through participating in several community radio projects in north London. One project recently gave her the chance to host her own show on Shalom FM radio. This station is currently seeking a permanent licence and Joanne has played her part in its month-long pilot project by hosting a daytime talk show.
Joanne said: ‘I would love to work full-time in radio but it does take quite a lot of hard work and dedication to get a good first break in the industry. The report I did for Digital Planet took me nearly a week to research, record and edit and I wanted it to be of the highest standard to be broadcast on the BBC. I hope it is going to be the first of many. The training I received at Lambeth College has definitely paid off already. I have used all of the great tips and preparation techniques in my reporting and presenting work and I can’t thank my tutors Annabel and Sheila enough for the wealth of knowledge they have passed on to me.”
Tutor Annabel Pearcey said: ‘We are all delighted with Joanne’s success following the hard work she put in to complete her course. She has made a huge effort in this area of work and shown great perseverance.”
