Access All Areas
Tutor Norman Maclean presents Access to Social Science, Social Work and Humanities Student Sheniece Facey with her College Graduation certificates at our ceremony in June.
June 2006
Lambeth College’s Access and Pre Access Graduation Day was designed to recognise and acknowledge the achievement of adult learners in our School of Education.
Our students are a diverse range of people, ranging from 19 to 50 years old, who have found themselves requiring academic qualifications, support and preparation in order to move on to university courses. For a number of reasons many students did not gain qualifications through the traditional routes and Lambeth College provides them with a one-year intensive opportunity to do this through our range of access courses.
Students have to overcome many challenges throughout the course including time management with childcare, health and relationship responsibilities, housing and financial concerns and the responsibility that comes with seeing how fantastic you really are!
Michelle Grant, a student on the Access to Social Sciences & Humanities course, said: “It has been a hard year for me and there were times when I felt like quitting, but perseverance, determination and the support of my excellent tutors saw me through. I am so pleased that I finished the course.”
Edna Herbert from the Access to Teacher Training course said: “One of the best gifts is being able to change the lives of those we come into contact with. This gift is found in teachers.”
The graduation day began with a trip to Brixton Ritzy cinema to see the film “Kidadulthood”, followed by an afternoon programme of discussion, visiting speakers and celebration back at our Clapham Centre. The event ended with a folk dance from Senegal by Performing Arts students Roanna Anderson and Leila Serrao.
