ASDA Nice! Emma, Alan and Antonio love their work at the new store on Old Kent Road.

June 2005

ASDA on the Old Kent Road is reaping the benefits of employing four ex-Lambeth College students.  Since December 2004, when the store was opened, Emma Constantinides, Alan Langford, Antonio Andrade and Nadine Douglas (not pictured) have worked flexibly in various roles, helping to make the store a huge success.

The four were students on Lambeth College’s Entry Level course in Retail which runs at our Brixton Centre.  They learned skills relevant to working in the retail industry, including communicating effectively with customers and staff, handling money, storing goods, as well as health and safety, literacy, numeracy and IT.

Emma and Antonio spend much of their time working on the checkout counters or in the cafeteria. Alan is currently working as a porter.  Each has won colleague recognition scheme awards.  Emma won the ‘We’re so proud of you’ award for always exceeding expectations and Antonio won the ‘You work magic’ award for which he was nominated by a customer who was very impressed with his service. Alan gained the ‘Happy to help’ award for his excellent attitude towards the shoppers and to other staff.   All were chosen to meet, talk and shake hands with Prime Minister Tony Blair when he visited the store to mark its official opening earlier in the year.

Kate Simpson, People Manager at the store, says: “All four colleagues reflect the attributes ASDA aspire to have in all their staff.  They are all very passionate about their jobs and a pleasure to work with”.
