December 2005

Students from the BTEC IT @ Work course recently visited MOD Headquarters in Whitehall. This visit was part of the MOD Education Outreach programme in which the MOD supports students in a number of London colleges with both curriculum and personal development work. Lambeth College was one of the original colleges in the partnership set up in 2001.

Organised by tutor Sandra Arnold-Jenkins and Andy Gillman from the MOD, students were shown how IT underpins many tasks in today’s workplace. Students also saw the newly refurbished open-plan building and modern conference rooms with 21st century facilities.

As this was part of a module in which students study a number of employers, Andy followed up with two classroom sessions when students were able to interrogate the MOD website and check out current IT job vacancies. Andy also undertook mock interviews to give them an idea of the preparation and skills needed.

Andy Gillman said: “I am delighted to be able to help these IT students gain experience of the workplace. The MOD undertakes this role operating as a large responsible employer working in the community for the benefit of students”.

Tara Sheridan, a student on the course, said: “I think the MoD is interesting. The mock interview was a bit nerve wracking but I did it!”

Saba Ali felt that the MOD would be a good place to work with good wages and that the mock interviews were good practise for real life interviews.

Michael Oshinowo and Tim Hyder thought the MOD was cool, especially the IT department and the way in which a phone call can be changed into an e-mail.
