Prime Minister Tony Blair gets to grips with Motorcycle Maintenance students Alex Watkins, Grace Owolade and Tutor John Ryan whilst taking a tour around our Engineering workshops at the Vauxhall Centre.

February 2005

As a precursor to the Government’s 14-19 Education White Paper, the Prime Minister Tony Blair made an early morning visit to the Vauxhall Centre of Lambeth College.  He was accompanied by Ruth Kelly (Secretary of State for Education), Sir Digby Jones (Director General of the CBI) and Brendan Barber (TUC General Secretary).

The Prime Minister and colleagues visited an Electrical Engineering workshop and our Motorcycle workshop.  Following an introduction from Mike Bristow, Head of Engineering, students from the College and pupils from local schools who come to us one day a week to do vocational courses demonstrated their skills and talked about the value of the training they receive.  A number of employers and representatives from higher education institutions with whom we have close links also attended the event.

Dame Lorna Boreland-Kelly, Chair of Governors, said: “Lambeth College is a leading player in delivering vocational skills to young people and I am delighted that the Government has chosen our college to visit on the day of the launch the 14-19 White Paper”.
