Loving her new role: Grace Owolade

October 2005

Grace Owolade has always had an interest in bikes but when she bought her first motor scooter she decided to learn more about how they work. She enrolled onto Lambeth College’s Motorcycle/Scooter Maintenance and Repair NVQ Level 2 at our Vauxhall Centre.  Just a year later she is a member of staff, working as a teacher and classroom assistant.

Says Grace: “I loved my course and was determined to do well.  I was a little unsure of doing this course at first as I thought I’d be the only woman.  However, I soon learnt that the students and the staff were all very supportive towards me and each other.  In turn, I found that I was good at explaining things to others and this was noticed by the tutors.  I was asked to work as a classroom assistant for the 14 to 16 year old school links project.  This led me to teaching my own class – the Introduction to Motorcycle Servicing for students with learning difficulties and disabilities.  I’m also studying for a PGCE Teaching award.  I’ve found a job which I really enjoy doing and would now like to go on and become a full-time teacher.”
