Deaflympics Heroes visit Clapham

Great British Teamwork: Esther and Nicholas from the Team GB Deaflympics football sqads.
March 2005
Nicholas Beese and Esther Maycock, footballers from Team GB’s Men’s and Women’s squads, came to our Clapham Centre in March to give a talk and multimedia presentation to students.
Students from the Sport & Leisure Progression Award and the Sport BTEC First Diploma were shown the highlights of the GB Women’s Bronze Medal winning performances at this year’s Deaflympics, held in Melbourne, Australia, and of the GB Men’s Gold Medal winning final against Iran. GB won 2-1.
Nicholas and Esther used photographs, video, sign language and interpreters to communicate their stories to the audience. The purpose of the visit was to interest students in the inclusion of disabled or hearing/visually impaired people in the playing and coaching of sports activities.
The students found the presentation very uplifting, cheering as the goals went in for our teams during the video highlights. A questions and answers session followed, plus a photo session where students had their pictures taken with the stars.
