Abigail and John: Raising funds and collecting useful items for Ghanaian school children.
Abigail Frimpong, a former member of staff at our Clapham Centre, returned to the College this autumn to ask staff and students for their help in raising funds for essential school equipment for Ghanaian school children.
Abigail left the College several years ago to train as a youth worker and recently worked as a community worker and English teacher in the village of Obogu in Ghana. As a part of her job there she set up a project to encourage more children to attend the local secondary school. Many children were unable to attend because they lacked very basic equipment, materials and even clothing. Abigail and a fellow teacher at the school, Daniel Yeboah, developed a scholarship programme which helped to provide school uniforms, shoes, satchels, pens, pencils and exercise books, etc for those children who had previously gone without.
On returning to England for a two-month stay, Abigail set up a registered UK charity which she hopes will raise funds, as well as donated items, for Ghanaian schools and children’s homes. Ex-colleague John Rawlinson, a teacher in our performing arts department, decided to help Abigail by encouraging fellow staff members to donate items such as clothes, books, toys and stationery and to get involved with a monthly sponsorship scheme to support Ghanaian children in their schools.
The Black History Show, staged by our performing arts students in October, raised £180 which was also donated to the charity.
Abigail has now returned to Ghana where she will continue her work with the school and the charity.
