René and the Eskimos in Europe

René (right) and Marthy
April 2004
René Bonnerjea and his wife, Marthy, are familiar figures at the Brixton Centre of Lambeth College. Over the last few years they have taken a number of courses in order to develop their IT skills.
René, a professional linguist, has just completed the first book ever written about the Inuit who came or were brought to Europe. The book covers a period from the times when the identity of the Inuit was unknown up to the end of the 19th Century when they were indispensable as guides and interpreters on journeys of exploration to the northern regions. Some of the outstanding pioneers include Joe and Hannah who saved Tyson and his men from starvation on an ice pack draft that lasted 196 days; Inuluapik who helped Captain Penny rediscover Cumberland Sound; and Sakeouse, the marvelous interpreter.
Although based on many years of research and containing rare texts and illustrations, René’s book is often as exciting as fiction.
