July 2004
On Friday 2 July Lambeth Universal Performers (LUP) presented the final double bill performance of ‘A Tear for a Drop of Water’ and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Councillor Irene Kimm, the Mayor of Lambeth, came to see the performances and meet the performers. After the show Mat Fraser, a well known disabled actor and this year’s LUP patron, and Ian Ashman, the College Principal, officially closed the afternoon and the tour.
Lambeth Universal Performers are a group of Performing Arts students, some of whom have learning difficulties/disabilities. As part of this year’s tour they performed to students and the general public at the Ashcroft Theatre in Croydon and the Jersey Arts Centre. The performances were complemented by drama workshops that were open to local colleges and schools, community centres and centres in supporting people with learning difficulties/disabilities.
Lambeth College promotes an inclusive approach to learning by enabling LUP members to embark on real tours. The group is set up to give interested students an opportunity to work in a theatre company incorporating all of the procedures of a professional company.
This year the New Opportunities Fund and Cotswold Trust helped the tour to materialise.
