Dame Lorna Visits No 10
July 2004
Dame Lorna Boreland-Kelly, Chair of Governors at Lambeth College since 1992, was a guest at a reception at Number 10 Downing Street hosted by the Prime Minister Rt Hon Tony Blair MP on 5 July.
The reception was held to recognise the achievements and hard work of people from the learning and skills sector, and particularly those who work with young people. The guests included young people, heads and staff from School Sixth Forms, Sixth Form Colleges, Further Education Colleges and Work-based Learning Providers. All have demonstrated considerable achievement in providing education and training to 16-19 year olds.
The learning and skills sector plays a pivotal role in the economic success of the country through improving the skills and employability of a large proportion of the population, young and old. It is also a driver of social regeneration and is often the hub of local communities making a reality of lifelong learning.
The Prime Minister said: “I am hugely impressed by the dedication and commitment of the people I’ve met today. They make a real difference to the life chances of young people – some of them from very disadvantaged backgrounds. The work they have been doing is the sort of thing we need to replicate across the country.”
“We want all young people to have access, within reasonable travelling distance, to high quality opportunities across school, college and work-based training routes to a mix of academic and vocational education that will meet their interests, aspirations and will promote participation and attainment in learning.”
