Volunteers Sonya and Dionne complete a series of challenges throughout the day.
On Thursday 1 April, representatives from the Electoral Commission, an independent non-political body, brought “The Box” to the Vauxhall Centre of Lambeth College.
The Box is a mock-up of student digs, with a glass front so that people can see everything that goes on inside.
Two student volunteers, Sonya Penda (Art & Design) and Dionne Elliott (Radio Production), had to live in the box for the day and compete against each other in a series of challenges. Visitors came along to watch and voted for what should happen to the box-mates and what challenges they had to overcome. At the end of the day fellow students voted Dionne as their overall winner.
The aim of this event was to promote and encourage students’ awareness of the electoral process and to demonstrate that voting can have an effect on outcomes. Staff from the Commission came on site during the day to help students to register and to answer any questions. Many students registered and will now be eligible to vote in all local and national elections.
The Box was designed to complement the Electoral Commission’s new National Advertising Campaign. Lambeth College is one of only 2 colleges in London with whom the event is being piloted.
