Radio

Radio_top_1

Radio is a very exciting area of the media and one that engages in many fields of public interest.  Across the UK, and indeed the world, there are literally thousands of radio stations catering for every music taste imaginable, for every language spoken, for every culture, every age group, those that focus on news and current affairs, phone-ins, chat shows, comedy, religion, drama and the arts; the list is endless.

It is a great medium for journalists, advertisers, musicians and writers etc and is a thriving industry.  Needless-to-say radio production makes one of the most exciting courses running here at Lambeth College.  It is a course that enables students to really get their teeth into the subject and demonstrate just what they can do.  Whether you get in front of the microphone or operate behind it the scope for dedicated creative individuals to enter the real world of radio is huge.

At Lambeth College we concentrate on one practically-based advanced course (Radio C&G Diploma in Advanced Media Techniques – Level 3) which gives students the opportunity to learn or advance themselves in producing and presenting radio shows, writing briefs, scripts and news items, presenting, interviewing, researching and scheduling etc and combines this with a good grounding in the necessary technical skills such as audio editing and mixing.

Joanne_Simmons_web_iiJoanne Simmons made her first freelance report for the BBC World Service's 'Digital Planet' using the skills she learned at Lambeth College.  She said: "The training I received has paid off already.  I have used the great tips and preparation techniques in my reporting and presenting work and I cannot thank my tutors enough for the wealth of knowledge they have passed on to me."  Read more...

As with all of our courses we ensure you learn as much as you possibly can about the industry you wish to enter.  One way in which we do this is to encourage you to take part in the College’s very own student radio station ‘Vox Radio’ which goes live in November each year and is accessible via our intranet ‘LCNet’ to all students and staff within the College.  Radio students research what musical tastes and hot topics our student body will be interested in and try and reflect these in their programming and advertising.  You will be expected to show lots of enthusiasm, come up with good ideas and be highly creative. Working on Vox Radio; keeping the station alive and interesting means you will have to work as part of a team and it will give you a good taste of how a professional radio station operates.

Claire_ChamberlainNot only did Claire Chamberlaine achieve a distinction for her Diploma on finishing her course but also won a silver medal in the 2006 Skills Challenge competition.  The prize was in the category for Sound and Radio recording.  Claire entered the advert which she had made for real clients 'My expanded Circle' who chose Claire's script from a shortlist of five. Read more...

Working in radio isn’t easy and industry managers will have high expectations of you from the outset.  It can, however, be an exceptionally rewarding and fun career with lots of great opportunities.

Our tutors have years of experience in encouraging students to release their raw talent and put it to good use. This combined with a range of great facilities and resources, excellent libraries and study centres and many like-minded fellow students to work alongside, will give you a great opportunity to shine.

This course is offered at our Vauxhall Centre to students with the relevant entry requirements and who are capable of studying at an advanced level.  It leads to a C&G Diploma and is designed to provide a route to higher education and/or employment.
