Lambeth College is proud to have produced world class journalists who write for publications ranging from the Islington Gazette, Brighton Argos, South London Press to Press Association, The Sun, The Daily Telegraph, Mail On Sunday and The Guardian. Students have also gone on to work in magazines such as The New Statesman, Computer Weekly, Legalweek and broadcasters such as the BBC. PR companies also recognise the qualification and students have proceeded to work in the press departments of local councils and charities.
The gold standard NCTJ qualification is what editors look for when they are hiring trainees – and without it, those wishing to pursue a career in journalism have little to no chance of breaking into, what is, a highly competitive industry.
Dominic Ponsford:
Pre-entry Newspaper Journalism: NCTJ
Since completing his course way back in 1998 Dominic has risen through the ranks from District Reporter, then Senior Reporter and Feature Writer followed by jobs as Chief Reporter and Senior News Editor and is now the Chief Editor of the Press Gazette. He says: “Lambeth College got me started and gave me the tools essential to get a job in journalism.” Read more…
Our NCTJ accredited postgraduate pre-entry fast-track course in newspaper journalism attracts high quality graduates from around the country. As the only FE college in London to offer this unique course, our fees are very competitive compared with private trainers. Yet the training and end qualification are the same.
You will be taught by journalists with years of experience in the local and national press and will be treated as reporters from the start. You will be expected to produce your own stories on a weekly basis as well as secure and carry out work placements on your chosen publications. This will help build up the all important portfolio of published material to show to potential employers. The college has a very strong record in preparing students for work placements, some of whom have secured their first job from their work experience.
David Bull
Pre-entry Newspaper Journalism: NCTJ
“I have had a great time on this course so far and learnt many new skills. The course covers a range of disciplines from writing to broadcasting and gives you a very good insight of the newspaper and media industry. I would like to be a sports reporter for a newspaper one day.”
To achieve the full qualification, students must pass all individual modules with a grade of 50 per cent and above. These include modules in law, public affairs, news writing and shorthand (100wpm).
We ask that you take the NCTJ pre-test, to test your aptitude for journalism. We also ask that you achieve 60 per cent or higher to secure a place. Other colleges may offer a lower entrance level.
Our tutors have years of experience in encouraging students to release their raw talent and put it to good use. This combined with a range of great facilities and resources, excellent libraries and study centres and many like-minded fellow students to work alongside, will give you a great opportunity to shine.
These courses are offered at our Clapham Centre to students with the relevant entry requirements and who are capable of studying at an advanced level.
