Construction CoVE

Full Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) status for Construction was received in the summer of 2003. This was one of the first full CoVEs to be announced in the country and confirms the excellent reputation of the School of Construction for delivering training and education. Course development
Increased student numbers, particularly on Level 3 and 4 courses
New courses introduced or planned
Representation on the CoVE/CITB Construction Technical Certificate Writing Task Group
Good links with local schools via the 14-16 Flexibility Project

- On-Site Assessment & Training (OSAT) to qualify the experienced workforce and assist craft operatives to obtain their CSCS card
New resources
- New ILT equipment in workshops and classrooms
- Study areas refurbished and new workshop equipment installed
- Latest versions of AutoCAD 2004 and a new A1 colour plotter

- Learning materials available on student intranet/VLE
- New ILT learning materials purchased and developed

- Talks eg John Soane on European conservation projects
- Specialist seminars eg Pressurised Relief Valves by Reliance
- Demonstrations eg H+H Celcon on the thin joint system

Effective relationships have been developed with a number of employers and employment-related organisations. This has involved a range of activities including presentations and seminars, membership of training committees, site visits and work placements for our students.

- Business Link seminars for SMEs eg Introduction to Construction Tendering
- JISC ILT and Construction with 50 delegates from 35 colleges attending the conference at the Vauxhall Centre in November 2003
- City & Guilds use of the carpentry workshop for a promotional video featuring Handy Andy from the BBC's 'Changing Rooms'

- A 16-19 outreach event in the summer of 2003
- Involvement in a range of CoVE projects:
- Key4Learning - identifying hidden disabilities
- DfES Standards Unit - testing health & safety teaching materials
- LSDA CoVE Special Development Group - testing Construction Training Award materials
- LSC - employability packs to aid job placements of students
- CITB/Prometric - online Testing Centre for Health & Safety
